0 Temporary 3 days ago Full Job Description The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 located in Kodiak! What you will be doing:
This position acts as the crew leader for the aluminum Buskin River sockeye salmon weir and the floating Buskin River coho salmon weir.
In addition, this position will participate in a Chinook salmon smolt stocking project, Chinook salmon broodstock collection project, rockfish population assessment project, rainbow trout stocking project, coho salmon stream surveys, a drone-supported mark-recapture population study and is responsible for various data dissemination, analysis and summary reports.
This position is typically staffed from early May through mid-November.
Duties for the Chinook salmon smolt stocking project include setting up smolt holding pens in 3 different rivers and feeding smolt on a regular basis prior to release.
The Chinook salmon broodstock collection project includes capturing adult Chinook salmon in 3 rivers with hook and line, beach seine, and snorkeling in drysuits with dipnet, safe transport of live Chinook salmon to hatchery raceways and participating in egg take operations.
Duties for the rockfish population assessment project include operation of a 22 foot boat, hook and line capture of rockfish, species identification, sex determination, length measurement, and experimentation and fabrication of alternate means of capture.
The coho salmon steam survey population study includes stream surveys in remote territory, occasionally 10 miles in length, beach seining and disc tagging of coho salmon directed by a remotely-operated Unmanned Aerial Vehicle.
Duties for database dissemination and analysis require skills such as proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, willingness to learn Geographic Information Systems software, and skills in scientific writing and data analysis.
Additionally, trips to monitor various sport fisheries via ATV, boat, floatplane, and hiking are necessary.
